Final Summer Break

Well Jazz ODC Fans – Summer is almost over and our vacations must come to an end.  I’ll try to sneak a few more weeks in and the it will be back to the grindstone.  Hope you are getting a chance to check out some of the great Summer Jazz Fests!!  For the next couple of weeks enjoy repeat shows featuring John McLaughlin (#198) and Christian Scott (#200).  I’ll be back after that with brand new shows throughout the rest of 2011 and into the new year.  Enjoy the rest of the summer before it’s gone!!

  • #235 – Jon Hassell

The Music of Jon Hassell is hard for me to listen to – in a good way.  I love his sound and compositions so much that I want to keep listening and not move on to other recordings.  For me his manipulation of the trumpet’s sound and the resulting atmospheres that he creates are magical, beyond musical.  I hope you can hear the mastery of sound manipulation when you listen to his work and can appreciate the subtleties that I hear each time I listen.  His music goes beyond “knowing” into “experiencing”!!

  • #234 – Jamaican Jazz

One of the genres or styles of music that I really love is Reggae, not only Bob Marley, but Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Steel Pulse, Lt. Stichie and more. When you combine the great sounds of Jamaica with Jazz you get a hybrid that goes beyond the liking of music to absolute fulfillment! This week check out two of Jamaica’s greatest musicians in Ernest Ranglin (guitar) and Monty Alexander (piano). These two have defined Jamaican Jazz while still holding onto their rich Jamaica music history. But they don’t stop there the two are also high quality Jazz artists that impress and satisfy listeners around the world. I like all of the Jazz ODC shows but this one is special!! Enjoy!
