#228 – 21 Spices

Every new release from Trilok Gurtu seems like a new chance for my ears and mind to expand yet again. He pushes the boundaries not only of jazz but of music in general – for this we should all be thankful! In “21 Spices” he combines with world class musicians,  Simon Phillips (drums), Michel Alibo (bass), Roland Cabezas (guitar), and he adds the NDR Bigband conducted by Joerg Achim Keller for extra flavor.

Check out a great interview with Gurtu on All ABout Jazz by Ian Patterson and look at the bands set-up in the rehearsal studio – WOW.  As a percussionist I was drooling and wishing I was there.

We will continue to hear from Trilok on Jazz Odyssey as there is more music to hear from this master musician – one of my favorites, hopefully one of yours!  Enjoy!!

  • #227 – The Future Of Jazz 3

I love the way artists are stretching the boundaries of not just jazz but many musical styles. Classical musicians adding rock elements, ambient artists adding jazz elements, reggae artists adding house beats, all in search of new styles, new genres, new sounds.  Many of us do not get the chance to hear these most modern versions of Jazz, we never know the creativity that is being put forward to extend the genre of Jazz well into the future.  Music from Ernest Ranglin, Blockhead, Polarx, Triosk, Deela, Seven Seas, Yppah, Gotan Project, Tabla Beat Science and more!  Well, sit back and enjoy – this is what is happening now and if it’s any indication of where we are going, I’m excited for the future of Jazz!  Enjoy!!

  • #226 – Matthias Lupri Group

When researching a show on Cuong Vu I came across Matthias’ name as vibraphonist on one of Vu’s recordings.  I listened closer and really liked what I heard, being a percussionist myself and playing some vibes in younger days I am always looking for new percussion talent.

After checking out Matthias’ recordings I was sold and I think you will be too!  His playing is fresh, but with control and intellect.  He studied with Gary Burton so I would expect no less.

It’s nice to find new vibraphonists that have an ear for the past and an eye for the future – his recordings are fast becoming my favorites this month and will be on my iPod for some time!!  Enjoy!

It’s time again for a wonderful mix of all things Modern Jazz. This time on the Monthly Mix you wil hear from Terrance Blanchard, Jazz Invaders, Arild Andersen, Tony Grey, Tord Gustavson Trio, Joe Lovano, Erik Truffaz and a whole lot more. I love these mix segments as I can showcase some of the music I have been listening to over the last month and introduce you to something you may not have heard before. Enjoy!!
